Gmail's speed is certainly something to admire. If they've lost some functionality in order to gain speed, that's fine with me.
Most of the users in our organisation don't use tables or doclinks in email and don't expect the attachments to stay in place (we email a lot of people on other systems).
Notes Web Mail and Hotmail just can't compete for speed. The Gmail mobile interface is quite good too - the best I've seen in a mail client.
Perhaps usability isn't as good as I've stated before. I've used it every day, so maybe I just got used to it.
The Gmail model is based around the belief that you shouldn't need to delete mail but merely label it and get it out of the inbox. If you want something back, you search for it.
If someone emails you a response, it will always appear in context because the old messages reappear at the bottom.
I remember someone in a gmail technical forum having a fit over gmail because it "doesn't have folders". They couldn't understand how labels did the same thing.
It's what you get used to (which is why we're unable to provide the best usability suggestions for Notes).
